Some thoughts I’m riffin’ on:
I know I am a slave’s dream
come true
I know I am a Nigerian princess too
come through
But I don’t know a single soul
not battling for their afterglow
That freedom never came cheap
That politic was slick and sheepish
Loopholed the footholds of freedom
But like a tsunami, we come
Demanding the declaration
Burning itself into the nation
We are free, we been free
Even though it took a minute for the message
Delayed to get to us
But it’s June
Its Jubilee
And by God’s grace
From brackish water to my Spanglish dialect
I am free
Dare me to show you
Like I could help this pressure
Freedom’s fresher than morning coffee
Sip some with me

Thank you, Rushell Gordon of Bliss Tea & Treats, for your vision and your legacy. You are one of my sheroes, for good reason.

We took a big step as a nation, and I am looking forward in a way I haven’t before. Watch out. You’ll see.
